New contributor to the blog!
Posted on 26 March 2010 4 commentsHi everybody! This is my first post in Geeksphone official blog. First of all, I would like to introduce myself, in an unofficial way. My name is Aitor, and I am a user of a Geeksphone One since late January. I participate in the forum with the user AitorTheRed (I am red-haired). I studied Telecommunication Engineering, and I have always been fascinated by technology and gadgets. Geeksphone One is my first Android phone, although I had already mess a bit with the Android SDK.
Once finished with the presentations, we continue with the post. The idea is to write one or two weekly post about news of the android world, and the company’s own news. The first of this news, as all those who navigate the forum knows, is about the online shop. The shop has been update recently, improving the usability and the interface. We have been told that soon there will be different accesories on sale, such as the replacement bateries that a lot of users have been asking for. They are also working hard to support the spanish language in the shop (some problems with the multi-lingual patch), so that Spanish users can use the shop in their own language. What do you think of it? Do you like it? You can leave your impressions in the comments or in the forum in this thread.
Greetings and see you in the next post!

Money !!!!
Posted on 15 January 2010 28 commentsI just wanted to share some thoughts and feelings with all of you.
Geeks’Phone is a young company, we started to work on our initial project less than a year ago and the company was established just some months ago.We have to admit that since everything started we have made different types of management errors derived from our lack of experience but also due to our innovative business philosophy and to the small size of the company.
I’d like to say that we have done our way with many difficulties and some times we’ve had the feeling that we would not be able to culminate our project. We’ve had important problems and many complications that from our financial and geographical position were almost impossible to face. Everything looked like an uthopy!
Nevertheless I would also like to mention that from the moment we launched the company, in June 2009; we’ve generated huge expectations, worldwide, with peaks up to 16.000 daily visits in our website.
We have been contacted by companies in the 5 continents, among them: Australian network operators, communication key-players in Silicon Valley, Indian wholesalers, a top Hong Kong Stock Exchange company which beg us to become our partners and exclusive agents in South East Asia, traders from Senegal, Telecom operators from the Gulf countries and the Middle East, a leading operator from Tunis, an investment company in Argentina, wholesalers all over Europe some of them top key-players in the international telecom market and, not the less important, a 13 year old geek blogger enthusiastic about Geeks’Phone.
And, of course, we need to mention all the interest we have awakened in Spain and the help and support that we have received, starting with Google’s Spain team, and the entire blogger community related to technology and Android.
All this people, some of whom I’m forgetting, has given us the strength and motivation to carry on with our project.
At present, Geeks’Phone executive team is formed by 4 senior associates, 4 more executive partners and 10 to 12 external but very close collaborators. No one, among the team members, is getting any financial retribution for his work or any other advantage. But there is no complain as Geeks’Phone has been very generous with us in Xmas. and we have been given a top quality Spanish “Jamón de Jabugo”.
But please don’t feel bad for us. We do not get any money but we are lucky enough to have all we need at home and some savings that make it possible to keep on going. This is our idea about genuine “entrepreuneurship”.
All Geeks’Phone team members are important, essential I should say, even if you are familiar only with Javier Agüera and with myself. The remaining members do not often appear in our forum but their work is fundamental.
Geeks’Phone was founded by Javier and by myself. We met each other a year ago through a Texas/Usa Company and by sheer chance we happened to live 100 metres away from each other.
All the funds needed to start Geeks’Phone are private and under absolute control of its partners. We will not give any figure but the initial investment represents the value of a medium range home. We considered the idea of asking support to a bank or a financial company but we weren’t successful.
Thanks to our first product, the Geeks’Phone “ONE”, and just one month after we started our online sales, we have attained the break-even and our investment is now returned. According to the current demand and prospects we will start to get profits within the next few weeks. Taking into consideration that we are a new born company we are quite proud of it.
We want to make it very clear that 100% of our initial profits will be reinvested (excepting Xmas. “Jamón de Jabugo’s” cost) pincipally in R&D related to the creation of our future products and to its design which will continue to be essential within our brand concept.
We knew, from the beginning, that we wouldn’t make money with the “ONE” and such where our prospects. But thanks to the “ONE” we have been able to start our business and to exist.
We hope it will be the elder brother in a family that will keep growing during the following months and we will direct all our efforts to ensure our freedom and independance regarding the existing structures in the communication global market.
Finally, the 1st Geeks’Phone batch (your phones), is now on its way to Madrid. They are well treated as they are travelling by air and we expect their arrival to Madrid-Barajas Airport next Sunday or Monday. The whole team is now ready, including our customs agent and logistics team, in order to ensure rapid deliveries.
Let’s hope that everything goes as announced as we have recently had some problems that made us, all, suffer. We feel very grateful for your patience and we are well aware that it has its limits.
So next week, with a 15 days delay in our schedule, comes the moment of truth and you’ll have your new “ONE” in your hands. We hope that, at that moment, you will be proud to have participated in this marvellous adventure.
Have plenty of fun with your “ONE”!
Many thanks from Geeks’Phone team……

Rodrigo Silva-Ramos

GeeksPhoners back online!
Posted on 6 January 2010 36 commentsHey everyone,
As you know, we have suffered some problems with our hosting as the forum has been inactive for 48 hours. While there has been some latency issues, the rest of our services including e-mail and online store have been working as usual.
The issue was caused because we were moved to a new server cluster by our hosting provider, MediaTemple. We don’t know yet the exact issue, but the huge delay was because of DNS propagation (it usually takes 24h to 48h).
We will be upgrading our service (which is already top-grade) to a premium dedicated server to avoid further issues and thus be able to provide the excellent service you deserve.
Thank you very much for your time and support.
PS: Don’t worry! The forum has been offline but we have been 24h (even being national holidays in Spain) both via e-mail and blog with you as always

GeekPhoners in maintenance
Posted on 5 January 2010 40 commentsHello, the forum GeekPhoners will be in maintenance for few hours.
Thank you.
Geeks’Phone Team.
EDIT: As we have been notified by our hosting providers, the issue has been solved. A DNS Zone change has been needed to solve the issue, so propagation may last about 24h to 48h. You can check the status of the incidence here: http://weblog.mediatemple.net/weblog/category/system-incidents/1074-gs-cluster-04-intermittent-latency/

Geeks’Phone Online Shop opening
Posted on 21 December 2009 7 commentsHi to everyone,
We have to admit that starting Geeks’Phone shop has been harsh for everyone, but since all problems have been caused by an extraordinary and unexpected demand for the “ONE”, we will not complain about it. =)
Things are already getting better, as the shop now charges the right amount, concerning taxes and shipping, customers sign-in correctly, and we are going to implement a direct payment option to be added to the existing Paypal option. Regarding logistics, everything is fine, as well, and it is all prepared in order to start delivering all handsets promptly.
All the people who made their purchase during the initial days, after the shop’s opening on December the 9th, are already taken care of. If you have any question or remark related to your purchase status contact us, taking into consideration that it is not possible to transfer their account to the new shopping system.
During the initial sales days, there was an unfortunate amount of payment errors related to taxes and shipping ; it was not our fault but Paypal’s, which blocked our account due to an invoicing excess for such a new company.
In order to solve these problems, we have added an item in our online shop, which represents the difference between what you paid and what you should have paid for a correct invoice. Note that you paid a smaller quantity, and never higher, so the error, if there is any, is always to your advantage.
Anyway, we will contact every customer to clarify all aspects.
Furthermore, we have noticed in the forums, that there was some concern regarding delivery date, as some customers wanted to change their shipping adress in case of delay. To avoid any problem we will send a confirmation e-mail, so that you could change your shipping information if it is necessary.
Thanks a lot, and sorry for the inconvenience. If your order went well (which is in most cases), you don’t need to worry about all of this.
Many Thanks……

In defense of the Fundamental Rights in the Internet
Posted on 3 December 2009 3 comments
Given the inclusion in the Draft Law on Sustainable economy of legislative changes affecting the free exercise of freedom of expression, information and the right of access to culture through the Internet, journalists, bloggers, users, professionals and developers Internet express our firm opposition to the project, and declare that:
1. The copyright can not be above the fundamental rights of citizens, including the right to privacy, security, the presumption of innocence, to effective judicial protection and freedom of expression.
2. The suspension of fundamental rights is and must remain the exclusive competence of the judiciary. Not a closure without a sentence. This blueprint, contrary to the provisions of Article 20.5 of the Constitution, put in the hands of a non-judicial body, a body under the Ministry of Culture, the power to prevent Spanish citizens access to any website.
3. The new legislation will create legal uncertainty around the Spanish technology sector, damaging one of the few areas of development and future of our economy, hindering the creation of business by introducing barriers to competition and slowing its international expansion.
4. The new proposed legislation threatens to hinder new creators and cultural creation. With the Internet and the successive technological advances has dramatically democratized the creation and issuance of all types of content that no longer come predominantly from traditional cultural industries, but from many different sources.
5. The authors, like all workers are entitled to live on his work with new creative ideas, business models and activities associated with their creations. Trying to hold with legislative changes to an outdated industry that can adapt to this new environment is neither fair nor realistic. If your business model is based on the control of the copies of the works and the Internet is not possible without violating fundamental rights, they should find another model.
6. We believe that cultural industries need to survive modern alternatives, effective, credible and affordable to suit new social uses, rather than limitations so disproportionate as to be ineffective in that they are pursuing.
7. Internet should function freely and without political interference sponsored by groups that seek to perpetuate outdated business models and make it impossible that human knowledge remains free.
8. We urge the Government to guarantee by law the net neutrality in Spain, before any pressure that may occur as a framework for developing a realistic and sustainable economy for the future.
9. We propose a real reform of intellectual property rights aimed at its target of returning to the knowledge society, promote the public domain and limit abuses of the managing bodies.
10. In a democracy the laws and their amendments should be adopted after due debate and having consulted all parties involved. It is unacceptable that legislative changes are made that affect fundamental rights in a non-organic law and deals with another matter.
